For someone else from the 1800's, this is pretty clearly a flirt, and simply expected of a woman. She's showing off vulnerability that she's actually capable of handling herself in order to play into the role she is used to being in.

I don't think I've met anyone who would sacrifice themselves for another.

I can't think of any one person, off the top of my head, that I would sacrifice myself for. But I'm more than willing to sacrifice myself for a cause. Should it resonate strongly enough, of course.
Though I'd try to solve the puzzle of how to go about serving my cause without dying first before doing anything of the sort. It defeats the purpose a bit otherwise.
